Luis Bolin may fairly claim to have been the man who lit the fuse to the Spanish Civil War. The vital years of Spain of which he writes are those of 1936-1939, and his detailed account is both comprehensive and vividly personal. On July 11, 1936, Luis Bolin left London in a chartered plane on the first stage of a secret flight arranged to carry General Francisco Franco from the Canary Islands to North Africa, where he was to head the Nationalist uprising against the Republic.
