The box folder - with 80 fine watercolour plates, 6 black and white plates and a coloured map all in very good condition, the folding bcloth box is foxed, and with a small tear at the top of the spine. Illustrated with three portrait plates, many simple line drawings, quarto, pp 205, very clean internally, hessian cloth in very good condition, the dustwrapper is slightly worn, and a little frayed along the top edge. VERY SCARCE. LIMITED EDITION OF 1500 COPIES. [Jane Colden was an American botanist, described as the "first botanist of her sex in her country" by Asa Gray in 1843. Although not acknowledged in contemporary botanical publications, she wrote a number of letters resulting in botanist John Ellis writing to Carl Linnaeus of her work applying the Linnaean system of plant identification to American flora, for which Peter Collinson stated "she deserves to be celebrated". A small number of illustrations on tinted paper, octavo, pp xxxii, 302, very clean internally, green cloth very slightly marked, the dustwrapper is a little worn and foxed, with several small pieces missing on the margins, a slightly larger peice missing from the rear cover and a small closed tear on the front, but now nicely protected in a removable clear cover. ["David was truly a superb naturalist, with extensive knowledge in geology, mineralogy, ornithology, zoology, and botany. Illustrated with three simple hand-coloured plates, octavo, pp xii, 378, extremely clean and sound inyternally, half calf and marbled boards, raised bands and leather label to the spine, very slight signs of wear. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Charles William Hamilton, 2nd Baronet, and his small neat signature on the title page. [Phillips lived much of his life on the south coast, and gained a national reputation as a landscape gardener. His first plan for the development of a lrge site in Kemp Town, Brighton, was rejected, but the second attempt five years later was accepted. His grandiose Anthaeum project, an elaborate indoor botanical garden topped by "the largest dome in the world", ended in disaster when the structure spectacularly collapsed just before its official opening. Small octavo, pp viii, 296, slightly age-toned, illustrated with engravings in the text, a large corner has been cut from the title page to remove a signature, the name of the author has been written on the title page, and on the reverse an inscription states that this is a presentation copy to the botanist A.D. Cotton from J. Skan (?). Recently bound in a simple quarter leather and cloth and quite a good bright copy overall.. First Edition. Quarter leather. Good.
