About This Item

(Stellenbosch: Hortors Ltd for the Stellenbosch Town Council, 1929). 4to; original dark buckram, blocked in gilt to spine and upper cover; pp. 149 + (iii) + (128); woodcuts; plates, incl. folding. Boards rather worn, mottled and bumped; hinges starting; some foxing to edges and endpapers, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Good only. Excellent plates. Text in English and Afrikaans. 'If at the present day one looks down from the ridges of Stellenboschberg or Papegaaisberg at the village situated in the valley, one can understand that the thought: "This is exactly what I looked for," must have risen at once in the mind of Commander Simon van der Stel when, coming from Hottentots Holland in his search for a suitable place to found a new "Colony," he reached, in the beginning of November, 1679, the little island formed by the double course of the Eerste River.' - Professor J. L. M. Franken .
