How should I not have a story to tell? And yet - but we shall see." Memoir of the daughter and philanthropist Samuel Gridley Howe and writer Julia Ward Howe, the author of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Among those whom she grew up with in Massachusetts were the Hawthornes, Louisa May Alcott, and she recounts those early days as well as her travels to London, Paris, and Rome, and her later days in Gardiner, Maine. Prolific 19th to 20th century writer, b. 1850. Her reformer father was a founder and director of the Perkins Institution and Massachusetts School for the Blind. Her mother was a poet. Hers was a large family that grew up in Boston. She wed architect, Henry Richards in 1871, and by 1876 they moved to Gardiner, Maine, helping with the family paper mill. .
