Per the jacket flap, "This is the story of the last desperate, heartbreaking, cruel year of the Civil War". With frontis and endpaper maps of portions of Virginia. Mr. Catton was awarded the 1954 Pulitzer Prize in History, and the 1954 National Book Award for non-fiction for this work. --- In black cloth-covered boards with gilt-stamped spine titling. Jacket with image to of soldier waving a battle flag to covers. --- With prior owner's signature to front free endpaper, and with a discreet Cincinnati bookseller label to front paste-down; else a tightly-bound, sound copy. Unclipped jacket with a little sunning to spine and small tears to edges, otherwise in good shape and wrapped in removable archival mylar protector.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; viii, 438 pages .
