London: John Stockdale, 1784. First single-volume octavo edition of Shakespeare's plays, lightly footnoted, designed to appeal to "the middling and lower ranks of the inhabitants of this country," who had been priced out of previous editions, as well as to those readers looking for a light alternative to their library sets: "The book now offered to the public may commodiously be taken into a coach or a post-chaise, for amusement in a journey. Or if a company of gentlemen should happen, in conversation, to mention Shakespeare, or to dispute concerning any particular passage, a volume containing the whole of his plays may, with great convenience, be fetched by a servant out of a library or a closet." Stockdale includes all thirty-six plays represented in the 1623 First Folio, with the text "as it has been settled by the most approved commentators." A bright, near-fine example of a popular milestone in Shakespeare printing, handsomely bound in eighteenth-century style by Philip Dusel. Octavo, measuring 8.75 x 5.5 inches: [18], 1079, [1]. Full period-style calf, boards ruled and decorated in gilt, lyre cornerpieces, spine elaborately tooled in gilt, red morocco spine label. Engraved frontispiece of Shakespeare; preliminaries including Rowe's life of Shakespeare and Shakespeare's will. Text in two columns, page of publisher's advertisements at rear. Light occasional foxing, a few pages of Julius Caesar with underlining and marginal calculations.

Description:
New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1845. First edition in book form of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven," the single most famous American poem of the nineteenth century, first published earlier that year in the New York Evening Mirror (under Poe's own name) and The American Review (under a pseudonym). Partly inspired by the early lyrics of Elizabeth Barrett (later Browning), to whom he dedicated this volume of poems, Poe composed "The Raven" in trochaic octometer, with a deranged musicality all his own. The elements are familiar even to those who don't read poetry: the "midnight dreary," the silk-curtained chamber, the raven perched upon the bust of Athena, the relentless refrain that drives the narrator mad. "'Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken! / Leave my loneliness unbroken! - quit the bust above my door! / Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!' / Quoth the Raven, 'Nevermore.'" Even before publication, Poe knew he had a sensation on his hands. When…

1799 Romance of the Rose Lorris Medieval de Meun Flamel Alchemy STUNNING 5v"The more a man gazes on what he loves, the more he sets fire to his heart and bastes it with bacon fat."
― Guillaume de Lorris, The Romance of the Rose
The 'Roman de la Rose' is a famous 13th-century Medieval French poem written as an allegorical dream sequence. It was written by Guillaume de Lorris who sought to express the feelings of romantic love, sexuality, and chivalry. It was completed by Jean de Meung who continued the work begun by Lorris. Thought to be the most widely read book other than the Bible in the 13th- and 14th-centuries, it was highly influential on other authors, notably including Geoffrey Chaucer.
This absolutely stunning
18th-century edition was published in Paris printed in five beautiful vellum-bound volumes. This particular edition is of note, not just for containing the 'Roman de la Rose', but also a preface by Clement Marot, Meung's 'Life of Jean Clopinel', a short treatise on the alchemy of… Read More

Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows
) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions…
