The principal purpose of this work is the publication of the reminiscences of Charles Sherod "Ted" Smallwood, a Chokoloskee pioneer. The occasion for the publication is the opening of a road from the mainland at Everglades to Chokoloskee Island. This event definitely marks the end of an era in the life of the islanders. In lower Collier County, south of the Tamiami Trail at the end of the State Road 29 lies a fascinating segment of the Florida Frontier. Seminole indians called the region Chokoloskee, meaning old house, but no legend survives to relate the reason for the name. Long time residents pronounce it “Chuck-aluskee” which is closer to the Indian name than the modern spelling suggests. Chokoloskee now denotes only the island in lower Chokoloskee Bay and the settlement on the island. But until about 1900 it was the name given to the entire region touching on the bay of that name. This is the history of an island located in lower Collier county, south of the Tamiami trail, of about 150 acres that owes much of its importance to its elevation. In a region where most of the land is barely above sea level, Chokoloskee at its highest point rises to more than twenty feet. This island is an important gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands. Fortunately, its early history has been preserved in this volume. The front cover has a noticeable circle at the lower outer edge where a sticker (probably a Price sticker) had been removed at some point. Otherwise the book is clean and the binding is tight.
