Prior to the use of anesthesia and routine surgery, medical colleges did not need to be near a hospital. With the advent of the use of anesthesia, the founding of the AMA which gave prestige to urban medical colleges, and the financial problems of the 30's, most country medical schools closed, including this one in 1856. 213 pages..
