About This Item

Fleming H. Revell Company, New York, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Signed by person(s) connected with book. 237pp; This story is the biography of Wilfred T. Grenfell, a pioneer in the development of Labrador and Newfoundland, Canada in the late 1800's. Grenfell was a medical missionary who attended London Hospital Medical College, graduating in 1888. He was sent to Newfoundland in 1892 to develop a medical mission. He initially opened hospitals in Newfoundland and throughout coastal Labrador. Later, he expanded his mission to develop schools, an orphanage, cooperatives, industrial work projects, and social work. He was one of the most profound people to develop this land in Northeastern Canada, and did a great deal to help the residents. He was later knighted by King George V on behalf of the people of these communities. Grenfell's life and work have been the subject of many books, and he was also the inspiration for at least two fictional characters in Canadian literature. He also authored several books himself. This particular book was written by Dillon Wallace, and published in 1922. Although there are many, many books available on the Internet about Grenfell that are signed by the author, it is very rare to find a book about him that he personally signed. This is one of those rare finds. This is a hardcover book with beige boards and maroon lettering. There is also a green mast of a boat on the cover. The book is in very good condition, but does have a wrinkle in one corner of both the front and back covers, and some soiling on the back cover. At one time, this book was part of the Central Christian Church library as a donation from Miss Alice Cathey. There is a bookplate on the front inside cover to this effect, and a library locator mark on the spine. The only other indicator I can find of it being a library book is a standard church library stamp on the bottom of pg. 13 and a similar one on the title page. There are no jackets or other markings pertaining to this. Inside, the pages are browning but tight. There are brown stains on the back endpapers. On the front endpaper is an original sketch and the inscription "Greetings from Labrador - Wilfred Grenfell", as well as an ownership label from Reverend Allen W. Lee. Dr. Lee was a noted author and former General Secretary of the World Convention for Churches of Christ, and he owned this book until I purchased it from his estate. On a later endpage (prior to the title page) is the original gift inscription to Miss Cathey, "To Alice, Mrs. L.M. Sniff. For a good girl, Christmas 1930". A photo of Dr. Grenfell is opposite the title page. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1 - 2 pounds. Category: Biography & Autobiography; Signed by person(s) connected with book. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 100785. .
