About This Item
New York: Oxford University Press, 1956. A "systematic and objective history" of this American artform, from its roots in African & West Indian music and emergence in New Orleans to then-modern forms such as bop & Afro-Cuban. Educated at Harvard and Yale, Stearns was a drummer in his teens, began teaching jazz in 1950, and founded the Institute of Jazz Studies in 1952. This book was widely used as a textbook, as well as a popular introduction to the subject. Light wear to book, ink name & dates inside front cover; jacket lightly rubbed with minor edgewear, light chipping, creases, front upper flap clipped but $5.75 price on lower corner, short tears internally mended with bad tape, causing external stains; a few pages dog-eared or with minor stains. Text clean; xii, 367 pages; index, bibliography, notes, 16 b /w photos. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. Octavo.
