One of a lovely series of classic books for young readers illustrated by famous artists of the day, each with a colorful paper pastedown to the front board. These have recently been reissued, making these original editions (this one from 1931; story originally from 1882) more highly collectible, particularly when they contain color plates, like this one, which has 6 of them, along with a Title Page illustration & colorful endpapers, by New Mexican artist Peter Hurd, protege of N. C. Wyeth. The hardcover book with black cloth-over-boards & colorful front pastedown is in VG+ condition: very clean, binding is straight & strong, both hinges secure; NO writing/underlining/highlighting, evidence of erased pencil on half-title page. Pages moderately tanned, heaviest around edges, with the occasional foxed spot, mostly in front matter, but a few spots on a few plates.
