Boards and spine quite sunned, the cloth faded to light brown. Corners gently bumped. Pencil notes/ownership to coated brown endpapers, next blank recto. Light foxing to edges of frontispiece engraving, not affecting image. Folding color map in near fine condition, a few nicks, light foxing. B/w engravings in the text. Scarce; a nice copy.

Spine faded, corners worn, a few spots to covers. Ink signature on a front endpaper. Dampstains to page tops and much spotting to pages.
Title continues: "A Complete Record of the Inception, Progress, and Final Success of that Undertaking. A General history of Land and Oceanic Telegraphs. Descriptions of Telegraphic Apparatus, and Biographical Sketches of the Principal Persons Connected with the Great Work." Charles Frederick Briggs (1804 1877) was an American journalist, author and editor. Here he tells the tale of the first trans-Atlantic communications by telegraph, which reduced the communication time between North America and Europe from 10 days the time it took to deliver a message by ship to a matter of minutes. Note the signature of Joseph T. Salkeld, a pioneer settler in the Huron Tract near Goderich.
