About This Item

Singapore: Marshall Cavendish International , 2004. The British Straits Settlements, established on the Malay Peninsula in the nineteenth century comprised mainly of the colonies of Singapore, Penang and Malacca. The merchant class of these territories was dominated by migrants from southern China, and many became wealthy, creating a demand for material culture from their ancestral home. Straits Chinese porcelain, or nonya wares, were developed to address this market. Outrageously colourful and decorative, these uniquely exuberant wares were ignored by connoisseurs for many years, but have more recently become prized collectors' items. The present guide provides a detailed outline of the history, characteristics and use of these porcelains, and includes valuable details on reign and shop marks and dating. 144 pp., 81 col. ill.'s, 2 maps.. First Edition. Hardbound. New/new. 29 x 21 cm..
