About This Item

South Africa: Bantam Books, 1993. Paperback. Strange Days Indeed. Message to previous owners to inside cover. Couple of creases to front cover. Foreword by Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert. This is just a book of journalism, amde interesting - hopefully - by the extraoprdinary period, people and places it chronicles. Because it is just journalism, and because journalism is by definition written under ferocious pressure, in wildy differing circumstances, it lacks tbe beautiful cradfted and polished structure of a good novel or book of history. The pieces which follow come as fully flawed as they came: chronolgocially, from the peak (or rather, trough) of PW Botha's State of Emergency in 1986, to the most unexpected event in South Africa - tentative agreement in mid-1993 on a date for the first all-in election for all South Africans. This is a short time in which to have travelled from the brink of civil race-war to the edge of something completely new and unknown. it is a period that will come to occupy chapters in the history books much longer and more prominent that those we learnt by heart at school. This book will be overtaken of course, and soon, by the yet more important chapter through which we are about to live. But I think these strange days we have shared are worth remembering. 368 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.). 1st Paperback Edition. Soft Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Paperback.
