First printing of this Newbery Medal-winning portrait of life in rural Florida, touching on the hardships of the poor residents of a small town and the ongoing conflict between farmers and ranchers. Lois Lenski uses the term "cracker" to refer to the cattle ranchers in the story, a Florida-specific name for a job that is known as "cowboy" in other regions. 8.5'' x 6.5''. Original green cloth binding with gilt stamping. Green and red pictorial strawberry endpapers. Illustrated in black and white. xii, 194 pages. Binding with light bumping to corners and spine ends, a bit of rubbing. Several erased pencil marks to front endpapers, front hinge repaired. One or two spots of soil to leaves, a few tiny pencil marks throughout. A solid copy.
Synopsis
Strawberry Girl is a Newbery medal winning novel written and illustrated by Lois Lenski. It was first published in 1945. Set in the U.S. state of Florida in the early 20th century, the story deals with two families, the Boyers and the Slaters. The Boyers move to Florida to raise strawberries. They come into conflict with their new neighbors, the Slaters, who raise cattle and let their animals roam loose.
