Inscribed by Lenski on the recto of the frontis "For the boys and girls of Riley School - With best wishes, -- Lois Lenski." There is an Iowa Reading Circle "Preferred Book" label under the inscription, which has been partially torn From the Foreword: "After the Seminole War, 1835-1842, Anglo-Saxons from the Carolinas, Georgia and West Florida drifted south and took up land in the lake region of Florida. .... Their descendants, in the second and third generation were, in 1900 and the following decade, ... living in a frontier community, with all its crudities, brutalities and cruelties. The 'Crackers' lived a primitive life ... replete with drama, and being people of character and dignity, they lived it, and still live it, with vigor." 194 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is tight with slightly browned pages. Many of the pages have some soiling or spots in the outer margins from handling. The date 1946 was written under the title of the title page with a sharp pencil and later erased. Ex-Library, rebound in red buckram, which is heavily worn from shelf-wear and usage, with a reproduction of the title and illustration from the dust jacket printed in black on the front cover. The original paste-downs and end papers have been replaced with plain paper. There is a stamp for Des Moines Public Schools with the date 1946 on the inside front cover. One leaf (pp. 159-160) was completely torn from top to bottom near the guttered and was repaired with adhesive tape, which has turned brown and brittle from age. Synopsis

Strawberry Girl is a Newbery medal winning novel written and illustrated by Lois Lenski. It was first published in 1945. Set in the U.S. state of Florida in the early 20th century, the story deals with two families, the Boyers and the Slaters. The Boyers move to Florida to raise strawberries. They come into conflict with their new neighbors, the Slaters, who raise cattle and let their animals roam loose.
