'As water covers 72% of the globe, and seas, rivers, snow, hail, ice and rain have taken such an important part in the formation and deformation of the earth, water largely conditions and forms primitive life. Hence the overwhelming role water plays in mythology and theology, in ritual and magic. Man and animal rely on water in their diet and for the preparation of food. Water was taken from brooks and wells, and the gradual development and mechanisation of these resources form the story of water supply. Secondly the use of rivers and seas as a medium of transport forms the story of the ship and shipping. Then water is used as a source of power; the development of the water-wheel started during the Roman Empire but reached its apex in modern times. Fourthly there were irrigation and drainage.' (-from Chapter One). v. illus., map. 25 cm. Includes bibliography and index.
