About This Item

xii+155 pages with maps, plates, diagrams, bibliography and index. Small quarto (10 1/4" x 7 1/4") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and blind-stamped logo to cover. Viking fund publication in anthropology number 38. First edition. This monograph is more than a study limited to hooks for catching sturgeon. It is a study of the sturgeon fishing complex with special emphasis upon catching devices, and is an admirable example of the comparative method applied to an integral set of data in order to reach historical conclusion that are continually checked against old documentary and archaeological records. It combines the synchronic and diachronic approaches. Condition: Previous owner's name on front wrapper, heal corners bumped else a very good copy.
