Vienna: Schrämblischen, 1818. Image is 6 1/4 inches by 2 3/4 inches on a sheet that is 9 inches by 7 inches. Drawn and engraved by pharmacist turned naturalist Ferdinand Vietz ((1772-1815) and published in volume 7 of Icones Plantarum Medico-Oeconomico-Technologicarum, edited by J. L. Kerndl and published by Schrämblischen in Vienna in 1818. Original hand-coloring. Like all the plates from Vietz's classic work on medicinal uses of plants, this is a lovely original print on high-quality watermarked laid paper. Condition is very good: clean and bright. Binding edge is untrimmed. This original engraving is guaranteed to be more than 200 years old.. First Edition. Single Sheet. Very Good+. Illus. by Ferdinand Vietz. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Berlin: Paul Parey, 1892. Hardcover. Good +. iv, [2], 602, [6] p.: in-text drawings; 24 cm. Dark brown coth with gilt-stamped spine title; color orchid illustration on front board. All page edges marbled. Elaborately decorated endpapers with ownership space on front fixed endpaper filled in by W. Nahlop. This was most likely Wilhelm Nahlop, who was head gardener for over 25 years in the late 19th and early 20th centuries at the Schloss Britz, now in the Britz district of Berlin. Four unpaginated page of publisher's advertisements follow text. The author, Berthold Stein (1847-1899), was the inspector of the Breslau Botanic Garden. In Good+ Condition: edges rubbed; ends of spine fraying; cloth splitting over joints with tear across lower spine; foxing, heaviest on first and last leaves; soiling in margins of a few pages; otherwise clean and tight.
