E.P. Dutton & Co., New York, 1942. First Edition. 255pp., blue cloth. Slightest trace of former label on front paste-down end-paper and neat rubber stamp of the Instituto Español on cover (very faintly) and fly title, otherwise a nice copy; dust-wrapper blurb inserted. Inscribed, 'To a friend of Ramón Sender's from a friend of England. Julia Davis.' A novel of the Spanish Civil War, an American woman's efforts to bring up two Spanish refugee children and her eventual romance with their widowed father. The novel is strongly autobiographical: Julia Davis unofficially adopted the children of the Spanish writer Ramón Sender when they arrived in the States in 1939 - their mother killed by Franco's troops, their father exiled. The book, dedicated to Sender, seems very uncommon.
