New York: Macmillan & Co, 1902. Thick, stout octavo, 461 pages. FIRST EDITION, trade issue, of this thorough survey of sundials and roses (there was also simultaneously issued limited printing of 100). Thoroughly illustrated with black and white photographs of dials in various garden settings. The author was an amateur historian who wrote frequently on the Puritans and colonial America. Earle was a passenger on a ship headed for Egypt which was shipwrecked on Nantucket. She fell ill as a result of the ordeal, never recovering her health and dying two years later. A near fine copy, in publisher's gold, white and green decorated cloth.

Original decorated boards with gilt lettering exceptional and in fine condition. A very pleasing copy. This work begins with a detailed treatise on all aspects of sun-dials, from classification, through construction, to the setting of sun-dials; followed by what are essentially a series of essays, on Roses and the theme of the Rose as an emblem, including a chapter on the Rosicrucians, a mysterious sect that arose in Europe in the 17th Century.
