About This Item
London : James Reynolds, [ca.1850]. One of the well-known series of educational diagrams on card published by James Reynolds of the Strand - in this case drawn and engraved by John Emslie. The central image is of the sun and a number of sunspots, surrounded by further images illustrating the causation of night and day; the sun's rays in summer and winter; the transit of Venus; an annular eclipse; the midnight sun on the north cape of Europe, and tables giving the relative size of the sun as seen from the various planets, as well as the build-up of a sunspot. Explanatory text is added to a number of the images. Steel line engraving on card, with original hand-colour. 285 x 228mm (approx. 11-1/4" x 9"). Very faint darkening of outer edges; a few tiny specks and spots, but overall in very good state.
