About This Item
Pittsburgh: Wolverine Supply & Mfg. Co, 1925. Good +. A shooting gallery game in which hoops are to be shot from a rifle apparatus mounted at the bottom of the game towards pegs at the top of the game mounted on wild animals pictures with various point values, including a kangaroo (20 points!). Other animals include a hippo, rhinoceros, tiger, moose, polar bear, panther, goat, bear, elephant, etc. The rifle apparatus includes an angle adjustment piece which would adjust left or right depending what animal the child was aiming for. This is interesting considering the use of artillery in World War I which ended just 8 years before the game was manufactured.
The Wolverine Supply and Manufacturing Company, founded in 1903 by Benjamin Franklin Bain, and later known as the Wolverine Toy Co., made children's toys for almost 70 years at its Pittsburgh factory. Wolverine expanded over the years, acquiring Sand Toy Co. and its famous "Sandy Andy" tin toys, eventually becoming a maker of toys only. This Hoop-O-Loop game followed the traditional gender roles of the day, with 2 male hunters wearing cartridge belts, and 2 female onlookers, one however with a rifle resting against her leg.
Patented March 31, 1925. The game measures 20 x 8 1/2", and is two-piece. Lacks the rifle shooting piece and the hoops. A bit scratched and some rust.
