Philadelphia: Carey & Lea, 1832. . 2 volumes. 8vo, purple cloth-backed original pale green boards, soiled; brown leather labels, chipped; endpapers darkened, minimal foxing; throughout; front inner hinge of Vol. I cracked, but firm; title of Vol. I waterstained FIRST EDITION. BAL 11040 (this binding not described), this set without the advertisements in Volume II. First separate work by this energetic man of letters who was by turns, a lawyer, a politician serving in the Maryland House of Delegates and as a Congressman for three terms. He was Fillmore's Secretary of the Navy and organized Perry's expedition to Japan and Kane's second Arctic voyage. He was a Union supporter despite his mother coming from a prominent Virginia family--he wrote a chapter of Thackeray's Virginians, and was a friend of Irving and Cooper
