About This Item

Hachette Australia, 2007. Softcover. Very Good +. I""n the of winter 1946, the British aircraft carrier, HMS Victorious, was modified to ensure the safe passage of over 600 Australian war brides from Sydney to Plymouth. The reverberations of WWII were still being felt around the world, but for these women the trip of a lifetime lay ahead and the chance to finally begin their married lives with their British husbands on the other side of the world. Catherine Dyson has brought together the stories of seventeen of these women, now in their eighties. Delightful, funny and sad tales emerge the tumult of the era, the fear of leaving home, the highlights of the sea voyage, the conditions onboard, the emotional experience of stepping into a future unknown. Each woman remembers the time from subtly and sometimes strikingly different perspectives. From Woolloomooloo to Fremantle, then on to Colombo and beyond, the voyage would prove a rite of passage for many who previously had never left their hometowns, let alone dreamt of foreign shores. On their arrival in Britain, the women faced the coldest winter for fifteen years and stricter rationing than they had experienced during the war years. The women look back on their lives with the honesty and humour that time brings. They came from all walks of life, but for all, the journey would change their lives forever. Swing By, Sailor captures their story with immediacy, momentum, and great feeling."" xiii, 273 p. : ill., 1 map, ports. ; 24 cm. #180122 War brides -- Australia -- Biography. | War brides -- Great Britain -- Biography. | Women immigrants -- Great Britain -- Biography. | World War, 1939-1945 -- Women -- Biography. #180122 Elizabeth's Bookshops have been one of Australia's premier independent book dealers since 1973. SWING by SAILOR by Catherine Dyson. It is a book written on the stories of a selected number of 700 Australian brides and finances who were about to board the aircraft carrier, HMS VICTORIOUS, bound for England in Autumn 1946 after conclusion of World War 2. They were leaving their families and their country to be reunited with their husbands and future husbands - the English sailors and airmen who had been based in Australia during WW2 and who had won their hearts. The book is a fascinating story of their voyage and arrival in England and their adjustment to a very different life in U.K.
