Original Edition. Matthaios Kamariotis (d. 1490) was one of the last Byzantine scholars. A native of Thessalonica, he was teaching rhetoric in Constantinople when the city was taken by the Turks on May 29, 1453. 2). First Latin Edition. The lexicographer and grammarian Phrynichios Arabios lived in the 2nd century AD, and his lexicon of the Attic dialect is a precious testimony to the use of Greek in his time. 3). Editio Princeps of this declamation by the great Greek rhetorician Libanius (314-400), accompanied by its Latin translation. This text, featuring a socialite parasite, is a veritable masterpiece of humor. 4). Collection of Latin translations of Greek texts, including an ancient history in two books by the Byzantine writer Gemistos Plethon. Plethon was born in Constantinople and spent much of his life in Mistra in the Peloponnese, an important cultural center of the late medieval Byzantine Empire. He was an early proponent of neo-Hellenism, believing that the people of the Peloponnese were the direct heirs of the ancient Greeks. The work also includes speeches by Dionysius of Halicarnassus, as well as several other minor works by Greek writers. Traces of waterstains on the last few leaves. A fine copy in its original vellum. 1). Brunet, I, 1510. 4). Adams, I, 616-96. 5). Brunet, II, 1011.
