Very rare first edition of an important grammar of the main oriental languages, translated to Latin. It includes the first Georgian grammar and an Arabic spelling system, printed in Arabic, multiple Georgian, Armenian, Hebrew and Turkish type. This first edition is very rare, no copies were ever recorded at auction. In 1670 a second edition appeared without additions, which is more common on the market and in libraries. The work is divided in two parts. The first one consists of contains the first ever printed Georgian grammar, set in mkhedruli and khutsuri type, this "makes it especially valuable" (Kenessy). The second part is divided in two, the first deals with the rules of Turkish and Arabic orthography, the second provides the letter-forms of Hebrew, Syriac and a historic background. At the end of the second part a Turkish translation is printed in Arabic type of the "'Corolla B.M. Virginis', a widely used devotional prayer" (Smitskamp). The Teatine missionary author Francesco Maria Maggio from Palermo was trained at Propaganda Fide in Rome. In 1636 he left Italy for Constantinople, then Syria, Persia and larger Arabia, Armenia and eventually Georgia for an apostolic mission learning the languages, habits and customs of the region. He was in close contact with his predecessors in linguistics: Pietro Della Valle, author of the first manuscript Turkish grammar, mentions in his Viaggio that he took Maggio in as his student of Turkish. Maggio leaned on the essential Italian-Turkish dictionary by Giovanni Molino, Dittionario Della Lingua Italiana Turchesca (1641) and on a lost manuscript Lexicon turcicum by Iacobus Stephanius. He came back to Italy in 1841 (with the bones of Stephanius) and most likely started to work on the present publication then.

He converted to Islam, but repented and was martyred on 17 February 1645 when he told the Pasha (Mehmed Saqizli) that he wished to return to his Christian faith. The account continues after his death, telling about his beatification and declaration of sainthood. The plates show the martyrdom and the holy relics of the Saint.With owner's inscription. One of the three plates slightly larger than the bookblock and folded in at the foot, otherwise in very good condition.
