About This Item
London: W. Reeve, 1749. [2],89pp. 12mo. Modern marbled wrappers. Titlepage reinforced along gutter, minute foxing, occasional pencil sidelining. Very good. An anonymous survey of the history of Tobago, written expressly to defend British claims to the colony. Much attention is paid to the prolonged territorial conflicts between the British, French, and Dutch in the West Indies. The French, as expected, are characterized as duplicitous in their diplomatic dealings with Britain over the islands. Non-political subjects include a brief description of the native people and a précis of Tobago's geographical relationship to nearby islands. While both EUROPEAN AMERICANA and the BEINECKE LESSER ANTILLES COLLECTION catalogue call for a map, Sabin lists one only for the second edition. There is no map with the present copy. A lively history of the island. Scarce. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 749/261. SABIN 94166. BEINECKE LESSER ANTILLES COLLECTION 205. HANSON 6294. GOLDSMITHS 8420. JCB (I)3:918. CUNDALL (WEST INDIES) 1887. HANDLER SUPPLEMENT 12.
