London: Darton & Clark, 1838. First Edition. Very rare: a history of America and Australia for children by American author Samuel Griswold Goodrich (1793-1860), under his more famous pen name "Peter Parley", with a charming woodcut vignette of Bungaree making a bow. [Muir, 2884.]
The work includes a surprisingly detailed account of New South Wales including notes on Tasmania, as well as a significant description of Bungaree, the first First Australian to circumnavtigate Australia, veteran of both the Investigator captained by Matthew Flinders and the Mermaid captained by Philip Parker King: 'my friend requested Bungarry to show how governor Macquarrie made a bow. Bungarry happened to be dressed in the old uniform of a military officer, and standing up in the stern of his boat, and taking off his cocked hat, with the requisite punctilio, he made a low formal bow, with all the dignity and grace of a general officer of the old school.'
The Ingleton copy, with his bookplate. Small octavo, with frontispiece maps of Australia and America and numerous illustrations; in original striped black and red cloth, extremities mildly bumped, near fine.
