About This Item
London: Printed...for the Members of the Limited Editions Club at The Curwen Press, 1963. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Böhmer, Gunter. One of 1500 copies, large octavo size, 486 pp., signed by the illustrator, with Monthly Letter and Announcement. French writer Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) is best known for his short stories written in a naturalist style. This volume presents forty-nine of approximately 250 that Maupassant wrote during his lifetime; of the forty-nine, over half of them (twenty-six) were translated by the also well-known author, Lafcadio Hearn.
Complementing the text are thirty-two illustrations reproduced by means of lithography from watercolours (seventeen full-page) by Gunter Böhmer of Switzerland, who signed the volume at the colophon.
This volume as complete as one can hope for: in addition to the book itself and the publisher's slipcase, the previous owner retained the original glassine wrapper, the Monthly Letter, and the seldom-seen Announcement.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full light blue cloth over bevelled boards, gilt lettering on a mounted brown cloth label and gilt decorated borders on the front board and spine, top edge stained brown, frontispiece one of the full-page illustrations by Gunter Böhmer, title page in blue and black; monotype Plantin on Abbey Mills paper, large octavo size (9 5/8" by 7"), pagination: [i-vii] viii-xii [1-3] 4-472 [1, blank] [1, colophon], one of 1500 copies, this number 351, signed by Gunter Böhmer at the colophon. With the announcement, one sheet, and LEC Monthly Newsletter, one sheet folded once to four pages, with horizontal crease for mailing. In a glassine wrapper, housed in a slipcase covered in purple paper, with cream paper along the edges, and line drawing, ruled border, and lettering on the spine.
___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The announcement and Monthly Newsletter are fine, clean and without wear. The glassine wrapper is near fine, clean, with minor wear most noticeable at the tail of the spine. The slipcase is near fine, strong and sturdy, clean but for a few stray marks, with minor wear and light marks on the bottom edge.
___CITATION: LEC Bibliography no. 346.
___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an unusually heavy volume and additional postage may apply ; please inquire for details.
