London: Baldwin & Cradock, 1832-1833.. 18 vols. Small 8vo. (16.5 x 10.5 cm). Bound by Zaehnsdorf in near contemporary half blue morocco over marbled boards, spines with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, marbled endpapers, silk ribbon page-markers, top edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece and engraved title to each volume. Ex libris Charles Cobb Walker with his bookplate to front pastedowns, perforated library stamp of The New England Conservatory of Music to letterpress titles. Some light shelfwear and bruising to corners, occasional offsetting, generally an excellent set in lovely Zaehnsdorf bindings. Maria Edgeworth (1 January 1768 22 May 1849) was a prolific Anglo-Irish novelist of adults' and children's literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children's literature and was a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe. She held views on estate management, politics and education, and corresponded with some of the leading literary and economic writers, including Sir Walter Scott and David Ricardo.
