About This Item
Cincinnati: Applegate & Co., 1853; copyright 1827 Hard cover, 24 mo ( measuring 4 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches ), in original blue cloth, with floral design stamped in blind to both boards, and the spine ornately decorated in gilt. 144 pp. Condition: Good Plus. The book is generally tight and clean within, with a couple of old ink stains ? to the top board and moderate soiling to both boards. Otherwise, very attractive and charming with the many engraved illustrations. A gift inscription in old ink dated 1855 from a father to his daughter, appears on the ffep. This work of history and geography for children of the young republic was first published in 1827, going through various editions in the subsequent years. Author Samuel Griswold Goodrich (1793-1860) a largely self-educated man, relocated his Connecticut bookshop and publishing business to Boston just prior to the advent of Peter Parley. The series was much imitated. As described in the author's introduction, this is the Revised Edition of the very first book of the series, and the current copyright page re-asserts Goodrich's original filing of 1827. OCLC 41485038. Revised Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good Minus.
