About This Item
1857. Chromolithograph. 255mm by 175mm (sheet). Chromolithograph from Louis Van Houtte's 'Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe' (Flora from the Nurseries and Gardens of Europe), which was published between 1845 and 1883.
Louis van Houtte (1810-1876) was a pioneering Belgian horticulturalist. After an extended plant hunting trip to South America in 1834-6, he returned to Belgium and established a nursery near Ghent. This was to become one of the largest and most successful nurseries in Europe. In 1845 he founded the horticultural journal, 'Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe' with Charles Lemaire. This was published from an office in the middle of the Van Houtte nursery. It was lavishly illustrated with chromolithographs of the plants for sale there. These prints were made by L. Stroobant, G. Severeyns, and Pieter de Pannemaeker, well-known lithographers who specialized in botanical illustration.Small waterstain at top and bottom of sheet, not affecting the image. A couple of very light foxing spots.
