Edinburgh: Tragara Press, 1973. . 8vo, stiff slate-blue wrappers Originally published in the "Dublin Magazine" April/June 1929.Tancred Martel is a pseudonym of Eugne Napolon Franois Joseph Gras, (1856-1928) was a French writer considered to be one of the masters of French historical novel by his peers.After a youth spent in Marseille, Tancred Martel moved to Paris. He befriended Jean Richepin , Bouchor Mauritius , Raoul Ponchon especially Thodore de Banville , to whom he dedicated his first book, The Foolish Ballads (1879). Between 1879 and 1880, he met Francois Copp, Barbey d'Aurevilly, Leconte de Lisle, and then much later Victor Hugo. On the death of Victor Hugo, in 1885, he was chosen among the disciples and friends of the poet to organize the funeral.
