Tancred Martel is a pseudonym of Eugne NapolŽon Franois Joseph Gras, (1856-1928) was a French writer considered to be one of the masters of French historical novel by his peers. After a youth spent in Marseille, Tancred Martel moved to Paris. He befriended Jean Richepin , Bouchor Mauritius , Raoul Ponchon especially ThŽodore de Banville , to whom he dedicated his first book, The Foolish Ballads (1879). Between 1879 and 1880, he met Francois Copp, Barbey d'Aurevilly, Leconte de Lisle, and then much later Victor Hugo. On the death of Victor Hugo, in 1885, he was chosen among the disciples and friends of the poet to organize the funeral.
