James Thomson (1700-1748) was a Scottish poet and playwright best known for writing the lyrics to "Rule Britannia!" Tancred and Sigismunda is a politically themed romantic tragedy that draws on historical events for its plot concerning a royal love story and the rights to a royal throne. While better known for his poetry, his tragedies remain well respected in scholarly circles.
