"The narrative follows the exploits of an aging Cossack, Taras Bulba, and his two sons. The younger, Andriy, falls in love with a Polish noblewoman and, after joining the garrison of a Polish town besieged by the Cossacks, is caught and shot by his father. Taras himself is eventually captured by the Poles and burned alive on a commanding height while, undaunted, he urges the retreating Cossacks to escape across the Dniester River." (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2014)<br /> <br /> In 1942, the daily newspaper "Lviv News" described this emigre edition as "Very beautiful and commendable, but with a sufficient number of inaccuracies in translation."<br /> <br /> Yuri Tishchenko (1880-1953) - publisher and publicist. He wrote under the pseudonyms S. Yu., Yu. A., Yu., Azovsky, Galayda, Fedor Garakh, Afanasy Dyulgerov, A. Kadilo, Pavel Lavrov and others. In 1917, he was sent by the Ministry of Public Education to Austria-Hungary to organize the publication of textbooks for public schools. In Vienna, from 1918-1919, he published more than 300 thousand copies of educational literature. In 1939 he was forced to flee to Prague, where he founded his own publishing house, which published the works of Ukrainian masters. In the 1940s, he founded the Children's Literature Workers Association, for which he edited the Ukrainian Children's Encyclopedia.
