"The narrative follows the exploits of an aging Cossack, Taras Bulba, and his two sons. The younger, Andriy, falls in love with a Polish noblewoman and, after joining the garrison of a Polish town besieged by the Cossacks, is caught and shot by his father. Taras himself is eventually captured by the Poles and burned alive on a commanding height while, undaunted, he urges the retreating Cossacks to escape across the Dniester River." (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2014)<br /> <br /> In 1942, the daily newspaper "Lviv News" described this emigre edition as "Very beautiful and commendable, but with a sufficient number of inaccuracies in translation."<br /> <br /> Yuri Tishchenko (1880-1953) - publisher and publicist.
