The younger, Andriy, falls in love with a Polish noblewoman and, after joining the garrison of a Polish town besieged by the Cossacks, is caught and shot by his father. Taras himself is eventually captured by the Poles and burned alive on a commanding height while, undaunted, he urges the retreating Cossacks to escape across the Dniester River."
