Presents findings related to remarkably well-preserved mummies recovered from modern Western China, in a region that would later become part of the Silk Road. The mummies and grave goods demonstrate an association with early Indo-European genetic and linguistic stock, suggesting that Western interaction with China was far more substantial than previously thought. 352 pages, with 190 illustrations, 13 in color. Includes two appendices, with one presenting a concise but deep dive into the evidence identifying cultures that produced the Tarim mummies as "Tocharian"; the other summarizes all of the radiocarbon dates recovered. Also includes a bibliography and index.
