About This Item
Leipzi, 1805. [4],283,[2]pp. Engraved title. Engraved frontispiece plus 7 plates (some folding) and 2 folding maps. 16mo. Modern plain boards, paper spine label. Professionally restored and rebound. Old library blindstamp and some foxing to titlepage. Else very good. The fourth volume of an eighteen volume work by a noted German academic, comprising a large part of the America related material found in the complete work. Zimmerman examines political institutions, and discusses the natural resources, territories, inhabitants and educational systems of the United States. One of the maps is a plan of Washington, D.C. and the other depicts present-day United States, including Baja California, with California labelled "Neu Albion," and the far western territory simply called "Quivira," as well as parts of Canada. The plates illustrate California scenery around Monterey, native California Indians, the mission San Carlos (after Langsdorf and Shelvocke), plant and animal specimens, and a natural bridge in Virginia. With a frontispiece after Bartram. This book played a significant role in establishing German opinion towards the young United States. SABIN 106341,106342.
