Purplish-burgundy cloth boards stamped in gilt on spine and front cover. Interior is clean and unmarked. Dust jacket spine faded; top right corner of front panel chipped; not price clipped ($2.50 net); in an archival mylar sleeve. 286 pages. Carl Van Vechten's 1924 novel, set in the year 1897, partially set it the fictional town of Maple Valley, Iowa, wherein a European countess returns to her hometown in the midwest, encountering and shocking the Main Street mentality of its inhabitants. In 1925, it was adapted into the film A Woman of the World, directed by Malcolm St. Clair and starring Pola Negri.
