[TAVERN ON THE GREEN; 1950 MENU] TAVERN ON THE GREEN in Central Park at West 67th Street MENU / Direction: Arnold Schleifer, no publisher/printer given/no date given, but ca. 1950 with "Summer 1950" note in ink on front cover by previous owner who kept the menu of this famed restaurant as a memento, 9" x 13"/small folio, 4 pages/one large, 9" x 26" sheet folded, text on front and back covers in green and on front cover city scene background in lighter green, 6" dark blue plastic spoon with Tavern on the Green New York City blind-stamped on its handle taped to upper left corner of front, complete menu with Drink List (e. g., Martini, dry……55 [cents], Curried Dishes, Supper Specials, Sunday Brunch, Wines, etc. over the two inside pages, on back cover are some historical notes, Data for Dinners, and note "It's 'Date in Manhattan' Televised from Tavern-on-the-Green"; ITEM NOTE: this early menu of this famed restaurant is rare with none found recorded at WorldCat/OCLC or listed for sale on the market (5/2/21); HISTORICAL NOTE: the name "Arnold Schliefer" at the bottom of the front cover along with the handwritten note "Summer 1950" indicate this is a menu from the early days of the famed restaurant, Schiefer and his partners took over ownership in 1943, "From 1934, the restaurant was managed by restaurateurs licensed by the City of New York's Park Department. In 1943, Arnold Schleifer and his nephews, Arthur Schleifer and Julius Berman, won the contract to operate the restaurant. The owners enlarged the dance floor and offered nightly music. A large outdoor patio offered dining al fresca…The menu was designed to be elegant but affordable for New Yorkers…[The restaurant] was frequented by prominent actors, musicians, politicians, and writers…In 1962, Joe Baum's Restaurant Associates purchased the Schleifer-Berman interest in the Tavern's operation…" (wikipedia); CONDITION: light-moderate wear, overall light age-toning, some edgewear including short, 1/2" tears at top edge of each page (the same tear going through the 4 pages), some spots of light soiling and staining along edges, and toning of a few short strips of tape applied in spots apparently as reinforcement by a previous owner and also toning of the tape holding the plastic spoon on the front cover.
