First Edition of the First Book on Television DINSDALE, Alfred. Television. London: Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, Ltd., 1926. First edition. Small octavo (7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches; 183 x 122 mm). 62pp. Portrait frontispiece of John Logie Baird, 5 photographic plates and 6 full-page diagrams all included in the pagination. Contains the first photograph printed as it appeared on the screen of the first television. (p. 38). Original printed flexible boards. Pictorial dust jacket. Jacket rubbed along extremities with some light dust staining. Some small, almost invisible repairs to head and tail of jacket spine area. Some of the plates trimmed close at fore-edge by printer, with the caption to the plate on page 45 mostly trimmed off. Overall, a very good copy and very scarce in dust jacket. Housed in a blue cloth clamshell. Dinsdale focuses primarily on the work of Scottish engineer John Logie Baird, the first person to produce televised pictures of objects in motion. Baird produced the first television image in outline and transmitted the first pictures between two televisions. Of Baird's early experiments, Dinsdale writes: "Baird's weird apparatus - old bicycle sprockets, biscuit tins, cardboard discs and bullseye lenses, all tied together with sealing wax and string - failed to impress those who were accustomed to the shining brass and exquisite mechanism of the instrument maker. The importance of the demonstration was, however, realized by the scientific world..." (p 49). Although he did not succeed in producing a viable system of television, Baird paved the way for future technical development. HBS 67950. $4,500

Description:
London: Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, 1926. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF THE FIRST BOOK IN ENGLISH ON TELEVISION. Handsomely cased in a pristine custom clamshell case, gilt-lettered at the spine and on the front board. Near fine. In 1922, Alfred Dinsdale (1896-1974) began a serious study of "the problems of transmitting and receiving visual signals, namely, television. His resources were small and he lacked any formal research training; he also did not have access to workshop or laboratory facilities and his financial position was precarious. Regardless, Dinsdale rented an attic and began to assemble apparatus using what were, on the face of it, most unpromising materials. "Dinsdale describes the technical problems faced by early experimenters (Jan Van Szczepanik, Boris Rosing, Denoys Von Mihaly and others), but focuses primarily on the work of the Scottish engineer John Logie Baird (1888-1946), the first person to produce televised pictures of objects in motion. In February 1924… Read More

There is browning to the edges pf the pale boards and to the spine, but almost no wear inc. to corners and edges. Just 1mm of paper loss/wear to foot of spine. Description:
London: Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons, 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Publisher's red hardback in very good condition: square with firm joints, no splits, just mildly rubbed. Complete with original dustjacket, which is chipped and darkened, and now preserved after being remounted on stiff white card paper. Contents essentially clean and tight, no pen-marks. And not from a library so no such stamps or labels. Size: 8vo (185mm x 125mm); pages: 62, with a frontispiece plate of Baird and eleven additional illustrative plates. Note: this work is nearly always seen in stiff card covers whereas this first edition is bound in a hardcover. As such it is very rare, probably one of a very small number of specially produced de-luxe first editions. Thus a very good copy of a fragile work offered for sale a reasonable price.
