New York: Harper & Row, 1972. First edition. 185 pp. Brown cloth backstrip lettered in gilt over yellow boards, with the dust jacket. Creasing to top edge of rear panel of jacket with a short closed tear, some minor edgewear and handling wear to jacket. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper and denoted "numbered series," with a hand correction by her on the copyright page. In a letter to the New York Review of Books regarding Paul Auster's review of this book, the author described the book as "this product of lifelong studying how to speak so that one speaks, of what is for being spoken, that which most waits on being spoken." A shorter earlier version which appeared in Chelsea magazine in 1967.
