"A quarterly journal of critical thought". Founded by Paul Piccone (1940-2004) in 1968 while a doctoral student in philosophy at the State University of New York, Buffalo. After earning his doctorate in 1970, he moved to St. Louis for a teaching job, then moved to New York City after not getting tenure. With Piccone as editor, and a number of fellow Buffalo philosophy graduate students and others serving as editorial associates, Telos began publishing important translations (many for the first time), philosophical articles and reviews promoting the Western Marxist tradition, including Frankfurt School critical theory, Phenomenological Marxism, and Marxist Humanism. In the early 1980's Telos began publishing articles that reflected an openness to conservative philosophical and political thought , signaling for many an editorial shift to the political "right" by, for example, publishing articles by and about Carl Schmidt, etc.

Issue No. 79 is a special issue on "Perestroika in Eastern Europe" edited by Arshi Pipa, including articles on "Reforming the Soviet System", "Contradictions in Perestroika", "The Transformation of Solidarity and the Future of Central Europe", "Crisis and Reform in Yugoslavia", "Romania: House of Cards", "Glasnost in Albania", etc. Issue No. 80 has articles "On China" (including "Democratization in China"), "On Poland" (including "The Obsolescence of Solidarity"), "On the USSR" (including "Demilitarizing the Soviet Union", "Perestroika at a Snail's Pace"), "On European Economic Unification" (including "On the German Question", "1992 or Bust!"), and "Philosophy and Other Things" (including "Must a Historicist be a Relativist" by Patrick Murray), etc. Issue No. 81 has a special section on "Intellectuals and the University", including articles on "The Corporatism of the Individual" by Pierre Bourdieu. "The Reuniverisalization of the University" by Paul Piccone, "Back to Adorno", "The Other Global Warming: The Impact of Perestroika on the US", "Problems of Conversion of Soviet Defense Industries", etc. Finally, No. 82 includes articles on "The End of "East-German Socialism", "The Politics of Mystical Ecology", "Israel and South Africa", "Durkheim and the Principles of 1789", "Does Critical Theory have a Future?", "After the Aging of the New Music", etc.
