[Des Moines]: Self published, 1915. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. Unpaginated. [92] pages. Frontispiece photograph portrait of author. Illustrated with halftone photographs. Brown cloth hardcover with gilt stamped title on front cover. Green and brown patterned end sheets. A blue pen inscription on the title page reads; "I believe this book was presented to my father Wm E G Saunders by his friend Mr Harvey Ingham (son of subject) circa 1915. George E Saunders." Another inscription on the title page, written in light pencil reads; "His son Harvey Ingham became editor of the Des Moines Register circa 1910. Believe his grandsons are the Cowles brothers - now proprietors of the Des Moines Register and Minneapolis paper and also Look Magazine. George E Saunders." No other writing in book. Hinges slightly loose but not cracked. Memoirs of an early Iowa pioneer, businessman, banker and sportsman. Includes accounts of the Indian massacres at New Ulm and Spirit Lake. Date of publication has been questioned by Graff. According to the inscriptions on the title page it appears 1915 is the more likely date of publication.

Illus.. [92]pp. 8vo. A rare account of early Iowa including an account of the Indian massacres at New Ulm and Spirit Lake. From a 1953 Midland catalogue: "The little Ingham books described above are a remarkable series of unpretentious publications containing long extracts from original journals, letters and contemporary newspaper accounts. Privately issued in small editions they are now most elusive, and destined to become sought-after rarities" (Midland Notes, No. 56, Iowa). William H. Ingham (1827-1914), born in Herkimer County, New York, headed overland for the California gold fields in 1849, though ended up settling in Iowa and exploring western Iowa and Minnesota.
