This book would have been published within ten years of the discovery of the Terracotta Army and produced for the Chinese market. There is no English text at all but a great many photographs of individual statues--human and horses--, detail images of many individual items, as well as overall views of the statues on-site, archaeological excavation work and illustrations of the various facial types to be found among the statuary. The "Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses", dating from 3rd century BC, were discovered in 1974 by some local farmers in Shaanxi province, near the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. They depict the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China, and whose purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife, and to make sure that he had people to rule over. Current estimates are that in the three pits containing the Terracotta Army there were over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses.
