About This Item

New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1987. Fine in fine slipcase.. Signed limited first edition, one of only 250 produced, an exceptionally beautiful copy. A belated sequel to Percy's 1971 LOVE IN THE RUINS, THE THANATOS SYNDROME was his final novel and likewise follows psychiatrist Thomas More, now just out of prison and released into a near-future Louisiana town to discover that Western civilization is ailing and failing even more than usual. In an interview with THE PARIS REVIEW the year before publication, Percy elaborated on the character: "My ideal is Thomas More, an English Catholic-a peculiar breed nowadays-who wore his faith with grace, merriment, and a certain wryness. Incidentally, I reincarnated him again in my new novel and I'm sorry to say he has fallen upon hard times." 9.25'' x 6''. Original gilt-lettered maroon cloth. Sea-blue textured endpapers. In original blue textured paper slipcase. Limited edition of 250, of which this copy is no. 247. 372 pages. Signed by Percy at limitation page. Only minor sunning to edges of slipcase.
