About This Item
Berlin: Deutsche Evangelische Buch- und Tractat-Gesellschaft, 1891. Hardcover. Very Good. 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches. viii + 76 pages. Scattered light foxing, but otherwise pages clean and free of marking, soiling and staining. Bound in maroon marbled boards over black cloth corners and spine. Spine with white label. Covers lightly worn. An interesting German (re)printing of a privately printed argument by a Philadelphian that "stage plays" were contrary to the Christian Religion. Although the argument was not new (it had been a subject of dispute since at least the 16th Century), this particular incarnation was something of a brief cause celebre, with the rather obscure American publication finding a much wider audience through German and French editions. A curious and unusual piece.
