About This Item
London: Osgood, McIlvaine & Co, 1895 [1894]. First Edition. First printing. Octavo (20cm). In contemporary green cloth, decorated and titled in gilt on front and spine; plain endpapers; 2pp of publisher's advertisements at rear; [i-v] vi-xiv, [2], [1-3] 4-416, [2]pp. A clean and sturdy copy, sunned at spine, front hinge repaired, rear hinge mostly cracked but holding; occasional spots of foxing; else Very Good.
James' experiment with playwriting in the early 1890s did not lead to success on the stage, though it did clarify some of his ideas about narrative structure (ANB). Over half of the English edition of 1010 copies was taken for the first American issue, leaving over 460 copies of the UK issue. (Edel & Laurence). EDEL & LAURENCE A44a. BAL 10610.
