Canterbury: Simmons and Kirkby, 1800. Second Edition (First Published in 1675). Contemporary binding of half blue leather with co-ordinated marbled cover and endpapers, no exterior titling. Very good. 7.75" x 4.75", pp. iii-lxxix, 2-336, Appendix p. 2-6. with gilt top edge and yellow fore and bottom edge. Previous owner name and date "J. J. Longbeare 1808" on verso of blank original ffe. Otherwise a very clean and tight text block with only the slightest aging on few pages of Preface. "Among the poets, of whom the present volume treats, there certainly are displayed continual proofs of an infinitely stronger genius than among their successors, though intermixed with a thousand gross faults and inequalities, which the modern rules of criticism and the coldness of a predominant judgment would have suppressed." (p xlivii).
