About This Item
Lightning Source Inc, October 2000. Paper Back. New. A new edition of Arthur J. Balfour's 1914 Gifford Lectures at the University of Glasgow. One year before his death, C.S. Lewis characterized the first edition of this book as one of the ten that had most shaped his philosophy of life. Balfour, British Prime Minister from 1902-05, a one-time President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science and an acquaintance of Charles Darwin, was a respected thinker and he provides a fascinating, accessible and common sense theistic counter to the prevailing atheistic naturalism and humanism of his time. Ranging over a wide variety of topics including miracles, beauty, probability, ethics, perception and a Darwin-inclusive update of the standard argument from design, Balfour shows the same straightforward clarity of thought and expression so revered (and occasionally reviled) in the works of Lewis. The book contains many helpful editorial notes, several appendices and material from Balfour not available in the 1915 edition. A marvelous and timeless little read and a special treat for fans of Lewis.
